Brandon Murphy from Caliber Creative Visits SHSUGD

This past February, Principle and Creative Director of Caliber Creative, Brandon Murphy paid a visit to the SHSU Department of Art Graphic Design Program. His lecture, How to Design What You Like and Get Paid for It, discussed his professional work and provided advice on how to garner more clients and earn a good living.

You can find your groove, but you got to fake it before you start getting paid for it (B. Murphy)

Brandon’s workshop kicked off with a lecture on How to Get a Job in Advertising. He covered lead generation, interviewing approaches, portfolio (physical and digital) formats, following up, self branding/promotion, and other related topics. The students then worked on a warm up creative exercise, the exquisite corpse. Students drew, cut up, tore, disassembled and reassembled images to create new compositions. Once that was complete, the students moved on to the main project, creating a new brand for an existing company. Brandon had the students split in to teams of two, one upper level and one lower level student. Once the teams were formed, the students drew company names and started the project. To wrap up the project students presented their work in the afternoon.

It was a great visit and Brandon provided give-aways to those that attended the workshop. Additionally, Brandon gifted examples of his work to the SHSUGD design collection.
