In the 2016 Fall semester, Rolando G. Murillo, HEB Grocers Sr. Designer, was invited to SHSU to give a lecture and workshop for the Department of Art Graphic Design Program. His lecture was entitled, To Be Determined, covered what a young professional needs to do to be successful in today’s creative markets.
Having traits like a strong work ethic, self-motivation, discipline, resilience, focus, and good judgment are all great to have early in a designer’s career, to create opportunities (R. Murillo).
Rolando conducted a branding workshop where students were encouraged to imagine an new kind of nonprofit organization. Students were instructed in branding techniques that were to be applied to the workshop project. The students were charged with creating a logo, social media presence, gorilla marketing elements, and a few other smaller components. These programs were met by faculty and students with enthusiasm and excitement. It was nice to experience real world design techniques that can be used in the future careers of those who attend the lecture and workshop.
